In 2002 the United Women's Orchestra reached its 10th birthday. A reason for celebrating, but also for looking back and reflecting upon our impact and the reactions to us. This is why I've included these pages: they contain the complete and uncensored versions of press reviews and articles.Naturally, they are not all complimentary- you could call them The Good, The Bad and The Downright Nasty- but they do give a revealing insight into the prejudices, expectations and mentality of the critics, both male and female. In fact (in some cases) that's often all they're about- and we had to content ourselves with 2 or 3 lines about our music... Interesting reading for those of you involved in Women's Studies and/or anti-discrimination movements.
The complete version is given in the original language: in some cases I've included translations in italics- (the good bits! - ie quotes we've included in publicity material).
Feel free to mail me personally for requests for full translations- I'll be happy to oblige. For discussions and feedback about the issues raised (artistic, political, (anti-)feminist... whatever), you can post your reactions to the JazzGrrls list for large and lively feedback.
