À la Mode

Written in 1998, this piece sums up several of the musical ideas developed in recent years. People often tell me that I have a recognisable style, and I'm never sure if I should take this as an insult or a compliment. "À la Mode".. that is, after my own fashion, is an attempt to exorcise my own clichés. Not sure if I succeeded... but it's still a good, high-energy piece.. an ideal opener/closer.

Familiar elements, then: metric modulations (fast swing to hiphop, in this case), long cross-rhythms, shifted-root harmony. There are 2 solo-sections over changes (tenor and trumpet on the CD, but open..) and an open drum solo.
I'm including a .pdf file of the first few pages of the score and an mp3 sample of the final theme.

Original line-up: as, as/cl, ts, ts/cl, bs/fl, bcl. 4 tp(flg), 3 tb, tba, pn, bs, dm.
Length: 6'30" - but only if the solos are kept short!
Information about ordering the music can be found on the "contact" page- see link above.

There are several alternative versions:
- for a 'normal' line-up (without the extra bass clarinet, bass trombone instead of tuba)
- fl, as/cl, as/bcl, ts, ts/cl, bs, 4tp, 2hn, 3tb, gt, pn, bs, dm.
