I wrote this solo piece in 2002 for the young dutch mezzo-soprano
Nienke Eggink. She took part in a European vocal competition (the Euregio
Vocalistenconcours in Wisch) and needed a suitable contemporary piece for
the occasion. The lyrics are about the uneasy relationship between music
and words.. need I say more?
I'm pleased to say that Nienke won a prize and is heading towards a
professional career.. watch this space!
Length: 4 minutes
The piece is for mezzo-soprano with piano accompaniment. I'm including
an extract from the score and an mp3 fragment sung by Jennifer van der
Hart and accompanied by Estèl van Opdorp in a version recorded in
2003 at the Arnhem Conservatory in the Netherlands.

What are words, but closing doors
On thoughts that should have leave to fly?
Whilst liquid notes and honey tones
Of golden horns and saxophones
Invite the soul to wing: it soars
To seek the wide, blue, open sky.
